Ellen Schwartz, author of Red Cedar nominated title Heart of A Champion, will present a talk about her book to children in grades 5 and 6. Heart of a Championis a work of historical fiction set in British Columbia about two boys in a Japanese Canadian family that play on the Vancouver Asahi baseball team. When Japan attacks Pearl Harbor in 1941, Kenny and his family, along with thousands of other Japanese Canadians, are sent to an internment camp in the interior of British Columbia. There, Kenny struggles to keep his family’s spirits up among the deplorable conditions in the camp.
